A photograph may make you hungry, but it cannot tell the whole story of a tin. Before buying caviar online, take a few minutes for six practical checks. They help separate the product from its presentation and plan for receiving and refrigerating it, rather than leaving that to the last minute.

1. Identify the species

Look for the species name, not just words such as ‘select’ or ‘premium’. Beluga comes from the Huso huso sturgeon; the CITES code HUS identifies it on the label. The size or colour of pearls in a picture cannot take the place of that information. If a product page does not make the species clear, ask before placing your order.

2. Read the traceability details and weight

The CITES caviar labelling system identifies the species, source, country, year, establishment and lot. It is not a tasting score: it helps establish what is being sold and trace its origin. Check the net weight too. A 50 g tin and a gift box containing 50 g of caviar hold the same amount of caviar but are different presentations.

3. Work back from your table

Consider how many people will taste it and whether caviar is the opening bite or the centre of the meal. Ten grams allow a first taste; 50 g shared by two people would mean 25 g each; 125 g among five gives the same amount. These are examples for planning, not required portions. If guests arrive in stages, several tins may suit the occasion better than opening one large tin too early.

4. Separate the caviar from the accessories

Check exactly what the selected product includes. Cofré offers individual tins of 10, 50, 125, 250 and 500 g. Its two gift boxes pair 50 g with two mother-of-pearl spoons, or 125 g with four. A tin does not become a gift box because it appears in a photograph beside a spoon; the declared contents of the chosen product are what matter.

5. Plan delivery and refrigeration

Check the delivery conditions for your destination and choose a time when you can receive the order. On arrival, read the physical label and refrigerate the product according to its temperature and date instructions. Do not infer storage conditions from a general article or from the appearance of the transport packaging.

6. Ask before paying

Review the current price, contents, date you need and ways to contact the shop. For a gift or a larger gathering, an early conversation can prevent a choice based on the picture when the quantity or presentation is not quite right. A well-chosen purchase leaves your attention free for the important moment: opening the tin when it is time to serve.
